Good evening! We are José María,
Francisco and Juan Antonio and you are listening to the
podcast sixth episode belonging to the IES Mediterráneo
Podcast Project. In this week recording, we are going to
have a look at Molvízar.
First of all, however, let us start with our
introductions:
Hello, my name is José María and I live in Molvízar, in
Amapola street, an area known as La Vega. At the moment I´m
studying the first year of Bachillerato at the
secondary school IES Mediterráneo in Salobreńa. Moreover, I
have one brother and one sister: my elder brother is
twenty-one and my little sister is eleven. My favourite
hobby is sport because I like playing basketball, football,
tennis, and so on. My favourite football team is the Real
Madrid and I hate the F.C. Barcelona team. Others of my
hobbies are computers and playing the guitar: I like playing
the electric guitar.
Hello, my name is Francisco. I live in Molvízar, in Camilo
José Cela street. At the moment I am studying the first year
of Bachillerato at the secondary school IES
Mediterráneo in Salobreńa. I have two brothers, one is
fifteen and the other is six. My favourite sport is football
and my favourite football team is the F.C Barcelona. My
favourite football player is Ronaldihho, who plays in the
F.C. Barcelona team. I also like listening to all types of
music, such as pop, rock, heavy metal…
Hello, my name is Juan and I live in Lobres, which is a
small town three kilometres away from Molvízar. José and
Francisco are my classmates. I have two sisters younger than
me, my little sister´s name is Zaira and my eldest sister is
Natalia. I like computers very much and I have been doing
karate since I was nine. I like going out with my friends
whenever I can to enjoy myself.
Now, it’s time we focused on the main facts about Molvízar,
the town where two of us come from:
Concerning its geographical location, Molvízar is a
little town on the coast of Granada. It is located at the
bottom of the Chaparral mountains. These mountains are known
among the people of the town as Jurite. The municipal
territory of Molvízar is 20.7 square kilometres and this
geographical position makes other towns feel jealous because
the people from Molvízar have the mountains and the beach
only eight kilometres away.

Moreover, in relation to its landscape, flora and fauna, in
the past, Molvízar was a wonderful town located between the
carrasco
pine forest of the Chaparral mountains and a
marvellous territory watered by a system which the Moors
established when they stayed in Spain and dominated the
town. Nowadays the landscape has changed very much: that
pine forest has been burnt by summer fires and the irrigated
regions have become land for construction, which obviously
contributes to the destruction of the landscape.
Many animals run through these lands, but less than in the
past years, when the forest was still virgin and any
disaster had happened. However, we can find some animal
species such as the wild board, the blackbirds, the
partridges and so on, in the middle and high areas; and in
the high areas, we can find wild goats and eagles.
The vegetal species in our forests aren’t much varied. The
wild species include the carrasco pines, the holm oaks and
the locust trees.
If we talk about the economy of this town, we can say
that it is mainly based on the agriculture: we could say
that 60% of its inhabitants continue practicing this
activity, in greenhouses or outdoors. Tourism is not one of
the biggest industries, though recently we can observe a
slight increase in tourism activities, which so far benefits
innkeepers.
The Molvízar society consists of humble people. It
is a relatively old population but this situation is
changing with the arrival of immigrants from the east and
the north of Africa.
The main tradition of its inhabitants is “ir de choto”,
which implies a meal in family on 6th January, when a kid is
cooked. The ancient habit of the pig slaughter and the party
around this fact also persist.
Finally, let us talk about our popular festivities.
On 26th July Catholics celebrate Santa Ana’s day and the
people enjoy themselves with the festivities that the
Commission of Celebrations organizes. These celebrations
last about 5 days: usually between the 23rd and
28th. During this celebration nobody must miss
the representation of Moros y Cristianos, in the
Constitución square.
This representation has a great tradition in Molvízar and is
an unavoidable appointment for everyone coming on 7th
October, when we celebrate the festivity of the Virgin of
Rosario, in which there is a festival at night. The
celebrations of the carnival, the Candelaria, day of the
Cruz (Cross Day) and a cultural week are other outstanding
activities, too.

Well, that was all. We hope you have found this information
interesting and you want to visit our town.
Thanks for listening!
