Good evening! We are Matías and Enrique and you are listening to the podcast fourth episode belonging to the IES Mediterráneo Podcast Project. In this week recording, we are going to have a look at the festivities in Salobreña, which is a quiet famous town in the south of Granada, Spain.

In Salobreña there are really beautiful beaches, quiet streets, good people, a lot of traditional food and a lot more. But apart from all this, people love festivities. Here, in Salobreña, we have a lot of traditional festivities all year round. Let’s focus now on two of these festivities.

In the first place we are going to deal with the festivity of San Juan, which takes place on 24th June.

From our point of view, this festivity is the best because there is a week of different amusements, such as bumper cars, roller coasters, ghost trains, a merry-go-rounds, big wheels and karts. You can also eat candy floss, pop corns, chips, hamburgers, hot dogs… and there isn’t any queue. That’s why it is so good! When children surround you, and you can see how happy they are, you would like to be a little boy again and play in a bouncy castle. This happens every year.

At midnight, people go to the beach for a bathe. This is a symbol of good luck for the next year. Besides, on the sand, there are a lot of big bonfires, where people throw pieces their desires and dreams put down on paper.

After that… party, party and more party.

In the second place we are going to deal with the festivity of the Virgen del Rosario, which takes place in October.

She is our patron saint and our most famous festivity. During this celebration the Virgin is carried by boat through the sea and a music band is waiting by the seashore so, after a long trip, the Virgin is carried by people who want take her to a street which is called as the Virgin. The procession finishes at about one or two am. In the evening, there are amusements and a lot of markets along the seafront and discos are open to all people. There we dance and meet new people.

In this festivity, you can go to concerts of famous singers and the best of all is the election of the queen and the mister of these celebrations in a beauty contest. Two of our good friends had the second and third places. They earned a lot of money (about four hundred Euros), and invited us to go to a pub where we had “tapas”. We didn’t sleep at all!

Well, that was all. We hope you have found this information interesting and you come here some day.

Thanks for listening!
